The Blue Economy CRC were pleased to host a delegation from Moananui for a four-day Immersion tour across Tasmania.

The four-day tour shone a spotlight on farming seafood and seaweed in Tasmanian waters, in collaboration with Australian innovation, precision farming, sustainability, governance and sustainable supply chain leaders and visits to a selection of on-water and land-based sites as well as a seminar series to learn more about aspects of precision farming in action.

Moananui is a blue economy cluster bringing together bold, forward-thinking organisations across New Zealand, developing New Zealand’s blue economy in new ways that generate economic value, connect people, and improve ocean health.

This four-day immersion tour provided a foundation for developing a blueprint for future aquaculture farms in Australia and New Zealand. A blueprint that can guide domestic developments and put the South Pacific at the forefront of responsibly produced seafood to meet growing nutritional needs within planetary boundaries.

Together, we are looking at how to integrate innovation, regulatory certainty, sustainability, financial literacy and bluetech/precision farming while addressing today’s barriers to entry/growth and building in resilience to changes in climate and nature around us.

As the Hon, Jeremy Rockliff MP, Premier of Tasmania states:

“The Tasmanian Government values the opportunities that a sustainable ocean economy can offer our State.

We also recognise the important role played by the Blue Economy CRC, nationally and globally, in ocean planning and stewardship, research and innovation, and the development of ocean industries. We cannot overstate the importance of oceans in the global climate change equation and for food production.

I congratulate the initiative to develop the blue economy, generate new ideas, connect people, improve ocean health and create economic value.”

The four-day included visits to the Blue Economy CRC kelp trial site and Tassal Feed Centre, Huin Aquaculture’s Whale Point Hatchery, Petuna’s Cressy hatchery, onsite visit to Biomar in Wesley Vale along with meetings with Government representatives.

At the completion of the tour, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Moananui and the Blue Economy CRC that will guide the growth of our relationship and direction we take, making us and our blue economy stronger together.
