Webinar: Carbon Accounting in Oceans

Wednesday 15th March, 2023
5pm – 6:30pm AEDT

Blue Economy CRC, Blue Cluster and Deloitte are running a deep dive on a blue carbon credit system.

Today, onshore carbon accounting schemes are an incentive to implement carbon reduction techniques in several industries worldwide. However, there is currently no marine carbon credit system in place.

A blue carbon credit system will have to be based on a solid carbon accounting model. It is known that marine carbon accounting has large knowledge gaps today. This is related to the controversial character of developing ocean NETs today. As a consequence, CO2 reduction is not yet a major driver for the development of a sustainable blue economy.

Applying the onshore GHG protocol for ‘anthropogenic’ carbon accounting in a marine context and taking into account best available knowledge on marine carbon accounting may constitute a step forward.

This deep dive hosted by Blue Cluster explores the need to develop such a carbon accounting system and what it could look like.

Presentation 1: Sustainable Ocean Ambition
Angela Williamson, BE CRC

Presentation 2: Scientific challenges in closing regional carbon budgets
Peter Landschützer, Flanders Marine Institute

Presentation 3: Which tools are fit-for-purpose to apply in marine carbon accounting?
Jim Smart, Griffith University

Presentation 4: Indigenous approach to natural capital valuation
Marni Oaten and Rick Shaw, Deloitte Australia

This presentation will be followed by a Q&A.

FACILITATORS

Name: Marijn Rabaut
Affiliation: Marine Policy Manager, Blue Cluster

As an independent expert, Marijn collaborates with various companies/institutes as a team/business partner. Trained as a PhD, he works as senior advisor, business developer, MSP expert and international marine policy manager.

Marijn works in the field of marine science, renewable energy, high level policy, environmental issues, aquaculture, spatial planning, sustainable development, international marine policy and business development.

Name: Kristien Veys
Affiliation: Innovation Manager, Blue Cluster

As Innovation Manager at Blue Cluster, Kristien assists business-driven innovation projects within the ocean economy by bringing science & business together. After graduating as a Bioscience engineer, she achieved an additional master’s degree in Marine Sciences. Kristien entered the world of work in a maritime dredging business and, after exploring the environmental impact of dredging activities, became specialised in environmental dredging and the remediation of polluted sediments.

Kristien’s work within Blue Cluster covers a broad range of aspects (from multi-use to coastal defence and ecosystem approach) which allows her to link issues such as climate change, sustainable development and (new) blue technologies.
