Thesis Topic
Advanced monitoring of salmon welfare in offshore aquaculture in Tasmania
PhD Start Date
October 2022
PhD Project Objectives
The Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry is expanding offshore, and thus fish are being farmed in more remote locations that are subject to more extreme sea conditions. Due to their isolation, offshore farms are difficult to access, and this creates challenges for monitoring fish. New advanced and automated tools are needed, therefore, to monitor fish welfare in offshore aquaculture. This PhD project will develop computer vision approaches to monitor fish in Tasmania’s salmon farms. It will provide an automated system to observe the condition of fish and support decision-making by managers. The outcome will be a model that helps managers maximise the welfare of fish while keeping the monitoring costs at offshore farms low. This PhD project is in collaboration between Griffith University, the University of Tasmania and all three of Tasmania’s salmon aquaculture companies: Tassal, Huon Aquaculture and Petuna.
Biography
I am a PhD candidate at Griffith University, Australia (2022-2026) affiliated with the Coastal and Marine Research Centre, the Australian Rivers Institute, the School of Environment and Science, and the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre. I earned my MSc. in Aquaculture, Environment and Society (ACES+) (2019-2021) at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (Scotland), the University of Crete (Greece) and the University of Nantes (France). ACES+ is a joint master’s degree which comprises semesters spent at the three universities. I did my BSc. program in Fisheries Resource Management at Can Tho University (Vietnam) (2012-2016). Between 2018 and 2019, I was a research assistant at Can Tho University and assessed the impact of climate change on coastal fisheries in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
