SITE
The Blue Economy Zone research trial is situated approximately 12 kilometres off the coast of Burnie, Tasmania, in Commonwealth waters.
This strategic location offers the ideal environment for studying offshore aquaculture, featuring open ocean conditions with higher energy, deeper waters, and stronger currents than traditional inshore farming sites across Australia’s coastlines.
This site was carefully selected after extensive environmental assessments within the Blue Economy Zone (BEZ).
The Research Trial Site sits within an open ocean site for research focused aquaculture and renewable energy activities and is supported by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Commonwealth and Tasmanian governments.
The research trial site area is clearly demarcated by four corner markers, each displaying a yellow flashing light visible from 5 nautical miles to ensure safety for all ocean users.
