WILDLIFE
The Blue Economy CRC research trial implements a comprehensive wildlife interaction management strategy to protect and monitor marine species in the vicinity of the site.
Following protocols outlined in the Wildlife Interaction Management Plan, the research and operational teams conducts regular wildlife observation surveys to document any interactions between the infrastructure and species such as seals, dolphins, seabirds, and migratory whales.
All staff receive specialised training in wildlife observation techniques and reporting procedures, ensuring consistent data collection and appropriate response measures.
The trial employs best-practice mitigation strategies including appropriate pen design, responsible feeding protocols, and the use of wildlife-friendly technologies to minimise attraction effects.
Special consideration has been given to minimising potential entanglement risks, with all ropes, lines, and nets designed and maintained to protect wildlife while serving their operational purposes. All wildlife interactions are documented in a centralised database, contributing valuable research insights while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
