The research trial focuses on two complementary commercial species selected for their scientific value in offshore aquaculture research.
Atlantic salmon, with their optimal growth range of 10-14°C, provide an excellent baseline species with established farming protocols in Tasmania. Their temperature tolerance makes them well-suited to the cooler waters typically found in this region.
Kingfish, preferring warmer temperatures between 18-24°C, complement the research with their strong swimming capabilities ideal for high-energy offshore environments. They also provide an excellent baseline species with established farming protocols in South Australia.
By studying both species in the same setting, researchers can evaluate how different biological requirements respond to offshore conditions, potentially leading to improved growth rates and reduced disease incidence.
