APPROVALS

The Research Trial has received:

  • Approval under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Read the Notification of referral decision – not controlled action if taken in a particular manner at (EPBC Number: 2024/09946). EPBC Statement of Reasons: Project Decision · EPBC Act Public Portal
  • Approval under the Tasmanian Government Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 and pursuant to section 6.1 (a) of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Commonwealth of Australia and the Crown in Right of Tasmania to support the implementation and operation of an aquaculture research trial in Commonwealth waters adjoining Tasmanian Waters in Bass Strait (the MoU).
  • UTAS AEC Approval of Ethics Application: 31450 Blue Economy Zone finfish aquaculture research trial.

Other approvals that are needed are also underway, including biosecurity for introduction of kingfish farming into Commonwealth waters.

Process

The Aquaculture Research Trial has been proposed in accordance with the arrangement between the Commonwealth and Tasmania in relation to marine farming research activities in the Australian Fishing Zone and supported by the 2021 and 2022 MOUs between the Commonwealth and Tasmanian Governments.

The proposal was referred for Commonwealth consideration under the Environmental Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and for State consideration under the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 and in accordance with the Tasmanian Policy for Marine Aquaculture Research Activities in Adjacent Commonwealth Waters and Permit Supporting Information Guidelines.
