Hydrogen Trials

GUARANTEE OF ORIGIN (GO) TRIAL

The Hydrogen Production & Research Facility is one of the pilot projects under the Guarantee of Origin (GO) Trial, a world-class assurance scheme being designed to track and verify emissions associated with hydrogen, renewable electricity and potentially other products made in Australia.

The scheme design is the result of extensive consultation by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department) and the Clean Energy Regulator (CER).

Green hydrogen powering electric buses across Hobart

In May 2022, the Tasmanian Government announced Metro Tasmania was to conduct separate operational trials involving battery electric buses in Launceston and hydrogen fuel cell electric buses in Hobart until June 2027.

The hydrogen fuel cell electric buses are now operational, with the trial continuing until June 2027. The Tasmanian Renewable Hydrogen Industry Development Fund allocated AUD$11.3 million to the hydrogen electric bus trial with Blue Economy CRC supplying 100% green hydrogen to support Metro Tasmania’s hydrogen electric bus trial in Hobart.

On 22 September 2025, the Blue Economy CRC advised Metro that hydrogen supply would be suspended following a product safety alert from a manufacturer regarding the motors used on the compressor at the Hydrogen Production and Research Facility in Lutana. Operations recommenced on 8 October 2025 after the manufacturer confirmed that the motors at the facility are not affected by the issue.

More information on the zero-emission bus trial can be found on the Metro Tasmania website.
