Green hydrogen produced by the Blue Economy CRCs Hydrogen Production and Research Facility is powering electric buses across Hobart as part of Metro Tasmania’s Zero Emission Bus trial.
An update on the trial, involving three Hydrogen Electric Buses operating across various routes in Hobart, was provided to stakeholders in Hobart on Friday 8th August.
The HEB trial, which began operational testing and passenger service in June this year, is the first public transport project to use locally produced hydrogen from the Blue Economy CRCs Hydrogen Production and Research Facility at BOC Australia premises in Lutana. The vehicles are refuelled at a dedicated Hydrogen Refuelling Station at Metro’s Mornington Depot.
Professor Irene Penesis, Acting CEO of the Blue Economy CRC and Hydrogen Production and Research Facility Lead states,
“We are pleased to be providing green hydrogen from our Hydrogen Production and Research Facility located at BOC Australia, to support Metro Tasmania’s hydrogen-electric zero emission bus trial underway in Hobart, Tasmania.”
“As Tasmania’s first green hydrogen facility housing Australia’s largest electrolyser generating 100% renewable, green hydrogen, this is yet another step in advancing the use of green hydrogen across industry and transport applications”.
The trial, supported by the Tasmanian Government through the Renewable Hydrogen Industry Development Fund, is providing real-world data on possible alternative fuel options for public transport vehicles. This key milestone forms a part of Metro’s ongoing modernisation journey and the future of zero-emission public transport in Tasmania.
Partners involved in the Metro trial include Foton Mobility Distribution, H2H Energy, along with the Blue Economy CRC.
