Following a competitive international search, we are pleased to announce that the Blue Economy CRC has appointed Angela Williamson as Chief Executive Officer.
Angela brings 25 years of experience managing complex, politically sensitive marine projects across government, industry and research sectors. Since joining as Director of Blue Policy and Planning in May 2022, Angela has overseen some of the CRC’s most challenging initiatives, including securing regulatory approvals and delivering Australia’s first aquaculture research trial in Commonwealth waters and bringing new strategic partners to the organisation.
Chair of the Blue Economy CRC, Greg Johannes, looks forward to the future with Angela at the helm.
“The calibre of our team’s work over six years has built a strong reputation that attracted high-quality candidates from Australia and overseas. The marine industries face significant challenges right now, and the CRC must navigate the natural complexities of leadership transition while delivering multi-million-dollar projects under public scrutiny.”
“Angela has the operational experience and stakeholder management skills to guide us through these challenges. She has already made an outstanding contribution during her time with us, bringing extensive marine sector expertise and driving innovation in projects like the Futures of Seafood initiative. She has proven these capabilities from within the organisation during some of our most demanding projects.”
The appointment comes as the CRC enters its critical delivery phase, with approximately four years remaining under current Commonwealth funding arrangements. Her proven ability to deliver breakthrough projects while managing complex stakeholder relationships positions us well for the future.
“The Blue Economy CRC is where industry, research and government come together to unlock opportunities and deliver outcomes that no one sector can achieve alone.” says Angela.
“Australia’s oceans are a national asset with global significance, and the next four years give us a critical window to strengthen ocean governance, embed stewardship, and provide clearer regulatory pathways that build industry certainty and community trust.”
“I am deeply committed to the role and responsibility to deliver tangible outcomes for Australia’s blue economy.”
On behalf of the Blue Economy CRC Board, we would like to thank Professor Irene Penesis, who maintained essential organisational stability and continuity as Acting CEO following Dr John Whittington’s departure. Her steady hand ensured our research programs maintained momentum and stakeholder confidence remained strong. Irene will return to her Research Director role, where she will continue to lead our comprehensive research agenda and Education and Training program.
Angela will step into the role commencing 8th September, 2025.
