Energy storage and Demand Side management in offshore Hydrogen based DC microgrids with controllable loads

PhD Project Objectives

With the rapid development of Direct Current (DC) energy sources, different DC loads in many industries and DC energy storage systems, major research area has been established for development of DC microgrids.

Most of the DC Energy sources have the characteristics of multiple time scales, larger range of fluctuations in power, intermittency, and uncertainty, matching the output of these renewable energy sources to DC loads dynamically will be difficult. To compensate this unbalance in power supply and demand, energy storage systems must be configured properly. Super capacitors and battery storage systems can be used to handle short term storage. Hydrogen storage systems have emerged as an option for long term energy storage which should be integrated with battery storage systems due to the slower time response.

With all these wide range of DC energy sources, loads and storage, high variance in energy sources and different characteristics in energy storage systems, achieving optimal power flow in these DC microgrids will require effective demand side management technologies. This can be achieved using certain demand side management measures by shaving the peaks of demand by controlling the shiftable and dimmable loads.

This research targets to integrate a Hydrogen DC microgrid in an offshore environment where currently uses standalone Diesel Generators which has high operational cost. With the uncertain nature of RES, power flow of the DC microgrid should not be interrupted to the critical loads in the process. Therefore, a demand side management algorithm which controls the loads which can be controllable should be integrated in the way to maximize the use of energy output of RES and energy storage facilities by keeping the critical loads are uninterrupted.

With this research, controllable loads will be identified in offshore aquaculture sites. Then the demand side management algorithm will be developed for the DC microgrid, and simulation and on-site testing will be done to achieve the optimal power flow.
