Martin Ziarmal
Thesis Topic
Moving Cities: Floating Urban and Architectural Elements as Opportunity for Urban Flexibility
PhD Start Date
December 2024
PhD Project Objectives
In December 2024, Martin Ziarmal began his interdisciplinary PhD on Floating Urban Extensions, partially supported by a BE CRC scholarship for the first six months. During this period, he is conducting a literature review on various floating foundations and will compare different types using digital and physical models. This will form a base for future industry growth for marine floating developments.
Martin’s PhD is being undertaken at Griffith University, under the supervision of Prof Joerg Baumeister and Associate Prof Hassan Karampour
Biography
I am currently pursuing a PhD at Griffith University, focusing on the topic "Moving Cities: Floating Urban and Architectural Elements as Opportunity for Urban Flexibility." Building on my Master of Architecture degree and practical experience designing for coastal conditions, as well as my role as a research assistant on projects like SeaFisher, I am exploring how floating structures can provide adaptable, sustainable solutions for environments. My research addresses the urgent need for urban flexibility in response to climate change and spatial constraints, driving my passion for merging innovative design with sustainability in both land-based and marine contexts.
